Lutz Hüning loves clarity in form, material and
function.
In accordance with his own dispo-sition, his designs move around
these compositional parameters.
Lutz Hüning first trained as a cabinet-maker in Bochum.
He then studied architecture in Wuppertal and Düsseldorf.
As a studio assistant for the British sculptor Tony Cragg, Hüning
first came into contact with his art toward the end of the 90ies.
Lutz Hünings own objects consist of reduction. But the enormous
mobility and agility of his design objects is surprising.
His sliding shelves for the wall are made of wood and multi-coloured
elements They look like boxes strung up on a wooden slat. The separate
shelves are flexible.
Looking at the wall object one could get the impression of looking
from above into a house or sky scraper that no longer has a roof.
In such moments Hüning's architec-tural claims to his creations
are revealed.
A further claim is for transparency. Lutz Hüning
constructs his objects in such a way that mundane actions such
as sliding, turning and rotating become an aesthetic pleasure.
Due to his professional background
the designer also has a great privilege: he is his own quality
control. As a trained cabinet-maker he investigates what the
material can accomplish. As an architect he checks the space
surrounding his objects. And as a designer he liberates the function
from its austerity.
