Lutz Hüning´s designs exemplarily prove that minimalism must not always be cool or unpleasant to live with. Quite the contrary his pieces of furniture radiate harmony and ease, values that are looked for in this hectic here and now.

Trained as a cabinet-maker and having studied architecture he is very competent to work with wood, his favorite material. His shelves and tables, chests and cabinets distinguish themselves by the exceptional quality of his craftsmanship and their efficent functionality.

Their balanced proportions and the clever use of colour witness the trained eye of the architect.

A very important aspect of Hüning´s work is the flexibility of many of his designs: Each single one of the differently shaped and coloured chests that form his `Sliding Shelves´ can be shifted on the rails which are fixed to the wall.

Just as his set of chests - appropriately named `Three Chests´- can be arranged in many ways or be separately used as stools, occasional tables or containers.

Each rectangular oak chest has the same measurements but each one is differently open on two sides. As a counterpoint to the clarity of forms Hüning plays with varying surfaces and colours: Wooden elements with their naturally veined surfaces are combined with parts that are painted with silk- matt lacquers. Just as he achieves another subtle play of colours by contrasting blond oak with stained oak.

Lutz Hüning, who already has been assistent in the studio of British artist Tony Cragg in the 80s, is not afraid to collaborate with other designers, too. So he joined forces with Oskar Zieta after they once met at Karena Schuessler´s and the team created a series of tables in dynamic shapes in 2009 exclusively for her gallery.
